New Logo for La Rioja Denominación de Origen
From now on bottles of wine from La Rioja Denominación de Origen Clasificada will no longer bear the familiar logo. In an attempt to appeal to younger wine-lovers, the long-standing logo will now be replaced with a brighter, more modern logo with cleaner lines. The aim is to reflect the new, modern aspects of wine-growing in La Rioja without detracting from the traditional wines.
In theory, the new logo represents a Tempranillo vine symbolising “heritage, creativity and dynamism”. I can see the vine, but Tempranillo? Maybe the leaf is shaped like a Tempranillo vine leaf, but surely it could also be any of a number of other grape varieties?
To me, it also looks like a person running with the vine representing the head, the bunches of grapes as the hands and the roots as the legs. Is this supposed to signify that La Rioja is racing ahead? That Rioja wine-makers are forward looking? I can’t find any references to this anywhere on the D.O.Ca. La Rioja website or anywhere else. So maybe this isn’t intentional.
What does anybody else think of the logo? Any other interpretations of the doodle?

I suppose the new logo is somewhat cleaner and fresher but will in really make people buy more Rioja? When will we see it on the bottles?

The consumers should start seeing the labels in October 2008. The Joven from 2008, Crianza from 2006, reserva from 2005, and gran reserva from 2003 being released this year should bear the new label in theory.

The logo is fresh and clean. The ‘RIOJA’ name perfectly stands out. I think it’s very good.

That makes our day, Robert, thanks for letting us know. After all our hard work, finally we’re getting some results. If you hunt around you might even find us in one or two other places in Wikipedia, also as a reference.
